»A123Systems Announces Plan to Build U.S.-based Lithium Ion Battery Mass Production Facilities
A123Systems announced it has submitted an application under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program to qualify for $1.84 billion in direct loans to support the construction of new world-class lithium ion battery manufacturing facilities in the United States, with the first construction location in southeast Michigan. If A123’s application is approved, this program would enable the company to dramatically expand production capacity in the United States, with full production volumes designed to supply battery systems for five million hybrid vehicles or half a million plug-in electric vehicles per year by 2013. »Automotive Manufacturers: Hybrid systems and electric & battery technology getting the greatest investment
In the next five years automotive manufacturers are expected to be intently focused on investing heavily in new models/products and new technologies to satisfy consumer demand in purchasing fuel efficient, affordable cars, according to an annual global survey by KPMG LLP, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm.  In the KPMG survey, based on interviews with 200 senior executives at vehicle manufacturers and suppliers worldwide, 96 percent felt that fuel efficiency will be the top factor driving consumer purchase decisions, but also rate alternative fuel, at 85 percent, and affordability, at 83 percent, high. »EDTA Announces Fourth Quarter Membership Additions and New Co-Chairman
EDTA is pleased to announce three new members during the fourth quarter of 2008. Compact Power, Inc., Mitsubishi Motors R&D of America, Inc., and Remy International join EDTA’s diverse membership of automotive and other vehicle manufacturers, utility companies, technology developers and component suppliers.  Also in the fourth quarter, John E. Bryson, Retired Chairman & CEO, Southern California Edison; Senior Advisor, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., was named Co-Chairman of the EDTA Board of Directors.  Mr. Bryson replaces Thomas Kuhn, President of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), as Co-Chairman.  Mr. Kuhn will remain on the EDTA Board of Directors.
